Title: The Accidental Earl by hibiscus
Rated: 15+ starstarstarstarstar [Reviews - 2]
Summary:

Duncan Beaufort finds himself, to his astonishment, suddenly inheriting the title of Earl of Blackwood. Raised a minor country gentleman, he has no idea how to behave in the highest circles of Society.

And he really ought to find a wife straightaway.

Lady Thea Desmond, daughter of one of the patronesses of the exclusive (and exclusively proper) Almack's assemblies, has spent her entire life behaving with absolute perfection.

The last thing she wants is a country bumpkin for a husband.

Oh, I like Iris. She's got some fire in her. Poor Duncan. I can tell that dealing with a new earldom is not the only stress he'll be managing in London. Miss "Buy Me a Wardrobe" has the markings of trouble written all over her. I adored Lady Blackwood. All steel and lace, taking care of business and allowing no emotion to interfere with the handling of affairs. Poor woman is alone now, with no husband or children, and she's still completely in control of everything. She's got a bit of McGonagall in her. ;) The comment Iris made about finding a wife laid the groundwork for some romance to enter Duncan's life. He will have to do something about his single lifestyle. I'm sure Iris would love to help him with that. Nothing like a sister to meddle...ah, manage your love life. Excellent beginning. Once again, your characters are fantastic. ~DoW

Author's Response:

I just realized that we can respond to reviews. Clearly I suck at this new system.

So, I'm really glad you liked the opening chapter. I think Iris winds up stealing scenes even when I don't mean her to. And the dowager countess does that a bit too. This is a romance novel, so the romance is the main goal of the story ;) He definitely needs to get a wife, since he's a brand-new earl and all. I posted the second chapter, I hope you like that one too! Thank you for the comments on the story, I appreciate it :)

God, I love your writing style. Uncomplicated and clean, you have an easy way of drawing the reader into the story without getting overly descriptive. The hints at Carolena's pride were very well done. It was plain that tragedy has befallen her, and life has not been pretty, but you don't give it all away here in this first chapter. She's tough, and doesn't depend on anyone, yet Nicolai gets past her defenses. I get the feeling she wouldn't have allowed that generosity from any other person. His connection to that happier time found the chink in her armor. The entire scene with the cat and its kibble just grabbed me, and I found my stomach clenched with the shame and disgust Lena must have felt. You've created a sympathetic character, and I really would love to keep reading to find out what happens next. Excellent beginning.~DOW
